Tire Manufacturers: Cement Kiln TDF Consumption Eclipses 800,000 Tons

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) 2025 End-of-Life Tire Market Report finds 79% of the 273 million end-of-life commercial and passenger vehicle tires generated last year in the United States reached end-use markets. That volume represents 5.154 million tons, of which Tire-Derived Fuel (TDF) accounted for 1.317 million tons, including 821,000 tons consumed in cement kilns.

As a percentage of the TDF end-use market, cement kilns increased 5 points, to 62%, from the 2023 USTMA ELT report. Following TDF in end-use 2025 markets are Ground Rubber, 1.2 million tons; Tire-Derived Aggregate, 207,000 tons; Exports (fuel, pyrolysis) 936,000 tons; and Other/Misc., 402,000 tons.

USTMA has published the report roughly every two years since the early 1990s, yielding more than three decades of data on end-of-life tire generation, markets and stockpiles. Surveys for this year’s edition indicate additional progress in winding down scrap tire stockpile volumes, to 42.1 million tons from 48 million tons in 2023.

USTMA data informs current American Cement Association work with the Environmental Protection Agency aimed increasing prospective TDF volumes by easing scrap tire stockpile waste designations.
